An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Benefits Service of Bristol City Council, paying Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support to around 38,000 households.  This important role will involve assessment and administration of all claims for these benefits, including cases from self-employed individuals, students and persons from abroad.

Bristol is looking for Benefits Assessors to process entitlement to Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction for its citizens.  You will be responsible for awarding entitlement, ensuring that payments are made promptly and in accordance with appropriate guidelines and legislation.  You will have contact with citizens by phone and occasionally face to face.  Experience is not essential as full training over a 6 month period will be provided depending on previous experince. During the training period you may have to work fixed hours. But once you have been trained you will be able to manage your working day flexibly.

What will I be doing?

You’ll have responsibility for engaging with our citizens, retrieving all appropriate evidence to support their claims or changes in circumstances and processing this information to a high degree of accuracy, ensuring correct entitlement and prompt payment.

The key things we are looking for are:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Experience of using IT systems, including producing letters. 
  • A commitment to delivering high quality customer care. 
  • The ability to work in a performance orientated environment, achieving targets and working to deadlines.
  • In this role we offer a starting salary of £22,627 (pro-rata) per annum which following a successful probationary period will increase incrementally to £24,491. The rate of pay within this scale may be considered for an already experienced officer.

  • To be successful in being shortlisted for interview, please submit an application which fully demonstrates how you meet each of the essential criteria as laid out in the Person Specification, this should be demonstrated in the ‘Further Information’ section of your application.
  • Your application should fully evidence your education and training, along with your previous employment history. On occasion we will receive high numbers of applications, we may then shortlist against the desirable criteria along with the essential criteria, therefore please demonstrate how you can meet desirable criteria if you can.
  • This is a permanent full time role, 37 hours per week Monday to Friday. Consideration of part time hours may be given once training has been completed. Due to the current pandemic restrictions we are all working at home and you will be required to work remotely until further notice.
  • Closing date is 29th november 2020
  • Shortlisting will take place from 30th November 2020
  • A basic English and Maths test will take place from 7th December and if successful, interviews are expected to take place during w/c 14th December 2020.
